Biomedical Engineering, My dream field. The course I always longed to venture in, combining the principles of Engineering with Medicine and Biology. That is really weighty and eye catching😊. However, in a country like Nigeria, It is really rare . About 1 out of 10 people know about Biomedical Engineering or have even heard about it, that is so concerning. Even though Biomedical Engineering is arguably the future of Medicine ( this should be a debate one of these days).
So what's Biomedical Engineering all about?  Biomedical Engineering is basically the combination of three fields; Bio - Medical- Engineering but could be further classified into two; Biology and Engineering. In lame man terms, Biology is all about  how life works while Engineering is about making things work by building, repairing and all. Therefore, Biomedical Engineering is a field of study that deals with the introduction of engineering principles to solve biological and medical problems and living conditions. It practically involves manufacturing, repairing and maintenance of medical equipment and machines, prosthetics, Education, etc. A very good  application of Biomedical Engineering was just this last pandemic period, COVID-19, because even the medical professionals attending to the patients were also at high risk of being infected. Biomedical Engineers developed an ECMO machine, a respiratory machine that can actively treat the patients by supporting the heart and lungs. The machine also stabilizes patients to fight the virus. A UVD-bot was also used as a disinfectant robot during that period.
Those are practical examples of applications of Biomedical engineering in solving health care problems. these applications would be further discussed in the next post. Please stay tuned!
